Rich tributes were paid to former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, credited with initiating economic reforms in the country, on his 97th birth anniversary today.
The Telangana government organised a function at his memorial 'PV Gyan Bhoomi' on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake here, a state government release said.
Bhajans were sung and prayers of different religions were conducted on the occasion, it said.
State Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy, Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav, former Union Minister and BJP MP Bandaru Dattatreya, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy were among leaders who paid homage to the former prime minister at the memorial.
Narasimha Reddy and other leaders praised Rao for initiating liberal economic policies in the country and providing leadership to the country during a challenging period, the release said.
The release quoted the Home Minister as saying he was instrumental in organising the funeral of Rao in Hyderabad on a grand scale as a minister in the then YS Rajasekhara Reddy government after disrespect was shown towards Rao in Delhi.
Congress leaders, led by Uttam Kumar Reddy, paid tributes to Rao at Gandhi Bhavan, the state Congress headquarters here.
