Former UNI journalist dies

Veteran journalist Satish Chandra Sarmah, who served United News of India (UNI) for nearly four decades, died here today following a brief illness, family sources said.

He was 68 and is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife had predeceased him.

Sarmah was undergoing treatment for the last few days at a local hospital and passed away this morning.

The veteran journalist began his career at the Shillong bureau of UNI in the 1960s and went on to serve as the news agency's bureau chief at Gwalior, Guwahati and Ranchi, from where he retired in the same capacity in 2006.
 

He also served as the president of Guwahati Press Club and Assam Union of Working Journalists.

His body was brought to the Guwahati Press Club this morning where a condolence meeting was held and later cremated at the Nabagraha Crematorium here.
