A relative of a former village head was shot dead while another was injured when armed assailants opened fire on them in Partapur police station area, police said today.

The incident occurred last night when Jevri village, Maan Singh, was returning from Ghaziabad to Meerut along with his cousin brother Girwar, nephew Kanwarpal and two nieces in his car, police said.

When they reached Delhi highway, a vehicle coming from behind overtook and stopped their car, following which its occupants opened fire on the victims and absconded, they said.

Kanwarpal and Girwar, who were shot at, were rushed to a hospital where Kanwarpal succumbed to their injuries while Girwar is stated to be out of danger, they said.

They said the attack might be a fallout of an old enmity in the village as stated by Maan Singh's family.

A case has been registered against unidentified miscreants, they said, adding efforts are on to nab the accused.
