Foundation laid for Rs 78.50 cr fishing harbour at Poompuhar

The foundation of a fishing harbour, aimed at benefiting over 30,000 villagers, was today laid at Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone through video-conferencing from here for the Rs 78.50 crore initiative that will benefit the people in 17 nearby villages, a government release said.

Initially envisaged in 1995, a detailed project report was prepared in 2001 following which Jayalalithaa approved the project, the release said.

The fishing harbour will have facilities including groynes, fish auction hall and communication, it said, adding that it will have provision to berth 700 motorised and country boats.
