The father, brother-in-law and two uncles, who the victim of an attempted honour killing tried to shield, were arrested today from Bihar's East Champaran district today.

The four and two others had thrown acid at the 17-year-old victim's face, stabbed and attempted to strangle her and left her to die on May 6 at Mathia Naharpur as she wanted to marry a man of her choice, Superintendent of Police Vinay Kumar told a press conference here.

The girl, however, gave a statement to the police blaming her boyfriend and friends after she was admitted to a hospital by local people who found her.

The police detected inconsistency in her statement and put a mobile phone, recovered from the spot, under surveillance and gathered details of what actually happened on the basis of which the four were arrested, Kumar said.

Her father Chhabila Mahto, two of her uncles Rajendra and Narayan Mahto and brother-in-law Krishna Mahta were arrested from places under Sangrampur and Kalyanpur police station areas while the police were looking for the two others, the SP said.

An acid bottle, a blade, blood-stained clothes and related evidence were seized, Kumar said.

The condition of the girl who was referred to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital at Muzaffarpur from a government hospital was stable, hospital sources said.
