Four arrested for extorting money from commuters

Four persons were today arrested for allegedly stopping cars and extorting money from the passengers in Sopore area of Baramulla district in North Kashmir, police said today.

"The police Control Room in Sopore received call from a person that after withdrawal of security forces from the area last evening, some miscreants had blocked the road near Chankhan bridge and were pelting stones on civilian vehicles," a police spokesman said.

The miscreants were threatening people travelling by cars and extorting money from them, he said.

"They were collecting Rs 100 to Rs 500 from car owners depending upon the model and make of the vehicles," the spokesman said.
 

Police rushed to the area and arrested two stone-pelters from the spot while others fled, he said adding, two more were later arrested from their homes.
