Four candidates -- two from the ruling Congress, one from Bodo People's Front (BPF) supported by Congress and one Independent backed by the combined opposition -- are in the fray for elections here to the three seats from Assam to the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.

The contestants are sitting Congress and BPF MPs Bhubaneswar Kalita and Biswajit Daimary respectively, Sanjay Sinh (Congress) and Haidar Hussain (Opposition backed Independent), Assembly Principal Secretary G P Das said.

The entry of Sinh, a sitting Lok Sabha MP from Sultanpur, into the fray has sparked off protests by political parties and other organisations in the state.

In a rare show of electoral unity, BJP and minority dominated All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have come together along with regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to nominate noted journalist Haidar Hussain as the fourth candidate to protest Sinh's nomination.

The current term of sitting members Kalita, Daimary and AGP's Birendra Prasad Baishya ends on April nine.

There are seven Rajya Sabha MPs Assam with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh being one of them.
