To ensure speedy disposal of pending commercial cases, Delhi High Court will have four dedicated "commercial courts" functioning from tomorrow.

Chief Justice G Rohini has designated two benches in the original jurisdiction as commercial courts to deal with the suits involving commercial disputes and two division bench in the appellate jurisdiction as commercial appellate courts to hear appeals.

Among the total four benches designated to deal with commercial disputes, two benches (one in the original jurisdiction and one in appellate jurisdiction) will be e-courts, functioning as paperless courts.

Of the two benches of the newly launched commercial courts, one bench will exclusively deal with company cases while the other will be dealing with only tax matters.

Subsequently, 11 courts of civil judge cadre in district courts -- one in each of the 11 districts of NCR of Delhi, have been designated to deal with commercial disputes.

"The goal is not only to streamline the civil justice system but to ensure speedy disposal of the cases also. This shall also be advantageous in the reduction of backlog of commercial cases which is the need of hour," registrar general of Delhi High Court Vinod Goel said.

These four benches will deal with matters involving commercial disputes relating to intellectual property rights, arbitration, insurance, banking, financial institutions, taxation, company cases, among others.

"It has also been decided by the Delhi High Court to redesignate the courts of commercial civil judges functioning in the district courts as 'commercial courts' and to ensure that all the matters involving commercial disputes are dealt with and disposed of expeditiously by the said courts," the registrar general said.

Till now only one commercial court at the district level has been working in Tis Hazaari Court complex, which was created in 1990s.
