Four held for smuggling gold

Four passengers, including two women, have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valued at about Rs 1.5 crore.

The seizures were made in separate cases in the past three days at the international airport.

In the first case, two passengers including a woman, were intercepted by customs officials after their arrival here yesterday from Abu Dhabi.

During examination of a microwave oven brought by them, 13 gold bars weighing 1.5 kgs were recovered. The value of the gold bars is Rs 37.51 lakh, a press release issued today by the customs said.

Another woman who had arrived from Malaysia on Monday was intercepted. She was carrying five pieces of gold bars weighing 1.2 kg and valued at Rs 31.41 lakh in socks concealed in her undergarments, it said.
 

A man was also arrested on the same day for allegedly smuggling gold weighing 2.7 kg by hiding it in his hand bag. The value of the seized gold was Rs 69.25 lakh. All the four accused in these cases have been arrested by the customs.

Another man was arrested on Monday with 500 gms of gold.
