Four persons, including two women, were arrested early today in connection with the rampage at Kalyani University in which two senior officials were assaulted allegedly by agitating employees and students, police said.

The arrested persons included a woman who was at the forefront in attacking the two officials - Estate in-charge Pratap Santra and Admission Committee Chairperson Prof Sujata Chowdhury.

The four were charged under various IPC sections including 143 (unlawful assembly), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty), 354A (Sexual harassment), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), they said.

When they were produced before the court of Kalyani ACJM Binay Kumar Pathak, the judge remanded them to four days' police custody.

One of the four arrested was named in the FIR which accused seven persons for Tuesday's rampage.

The protesters claimed that the Vice-Chancellor Rattan Lal Hangloo had declared the results of 10,000 undergraduate students of colleges affiliated to the university as incomplete a month ago.

Besides assaulting two officials, the agitators, who demanded the VC's resignation also damaged CCTV cameras and furniture in the university premises.

The VC had claimed that the university authorities have been trying to invoke a rule of law and instill discipline in the campus which some of the employees and students dislike.

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee yesterday visited the university and said action would be taken against those involved in the rampage, which was termed as 'unfortunate' by Governor K N Tripathi who is also the Chancellor of the university.
