Four infants and three kids died in Burdwan medical college and hospital in the last two days, prompting family members to agitate today in front of the hospital crying foul.

Denying any lapse on part of the authorities, hospital superintendent Dr Utpal Dan said, "Burdwan medical college and hospital is a referral hospital and patients come in from as far as Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, Arambagh and even the neighbouring state of Jharkhand. On an average, three to four crib deaths are reported daily from the wards, specially from the SNCU."

"Most of the cribs and kids who died in the last two days were referred to us at terminal stages and were suffering from acute malnutrition and other ailments. The doctors tried their best, but could not save them," Dr Dan said.

Meanwhile, a group of people agitated in front of the SNCU ward protesting the crib deaths and lack of facilities in the hospital. Police rushed from Burdwan police station and later on removed them from the hospital premises.
