Four persons including a woman and a child were killed and 40 others injured when the bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge near Ranikhet in Almora district early today, police said.

The Uttarakhand Roadways bus met with the accident at 5.30 AM near Bajola village, about 15 km away from Ranikhet, when it was on its way from Delhi to Ranikhet, SHO B S Sharma said.

A woman, a child and two men were killed on the spot while 40 others travelling by the bus were injured in the accident, Sharma said, adding, that though the exact cause of it is unknown, prima facie it appears that the mishap occurred as the driver dozed off.

The injured were admitted to Ranikhet government hospital from where six persons who had sustained serious injuries have been rushed to a hospital in Haldwani, he said.
