Four killed as train hits car at railway crossing

The deceased were identified as Keshav Katoch, a retired Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Executive Engineer, his two grand-children Shivam (10) and Rushi (6) and car driver Sham Lal (45).

The accident occurred last night due to alleged negligence of the railway crossing gateman, who forgot to close the crossing gate at about 10.30 PM, near Mohtali village in Himachal Pradesh, about 10 km from here, railway police sources said.

They said as the train was passing from Gate No 141 near Mohtali village at that time, the car driver was unmindful of the fast approaching train and tried to cross the railway line as the gate was open.

 

An ex-gratia aid of Rs 50,000 was announced for the families of the victims, Ferozepur Division DRM, Naresh Chand Goyal, who visited the accident spot today said.

Goyal also ordered medical examination of the gateman, who was arrested for allegedly causing accident.

He said that in case medical report suggests that the gateman was inebriated at the time of the accident, a criminal case under relevant sections of the IPC will be registered against him.
