Four passengers died and two others travelling in a van were injured in a road accident today at Bhella in lower Assam's Barpeta district, the police said.
The passengers were on their way to Doulashal from Barpeta town when at about 2 PM their speeding vehicle lost control and fell into a roadside ditch while approaching a bridge, police officers said.
As soon as the accident took place, local residents of Bhella came to rescue of the passengers, taking the vehicle out from the ditch along with four bodies even as its driver fled away, they said.

Two of the injured passengers were rushed to Barpeta Medical College Hospital.
One of the dead was identified as Ratneswar Das hailing from Barbila, while the injured were Dasiya Choudhury of Simlaguri and Akan Das of Barbila, the officers added.
Barpeta district Superintendent of Police Siladitya Chetia has rushed to the spot.
