Four poachers arrested in Assam

Four poachers involved in the recent killing of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam were arrested today.

Two poachers allegedly involved in the recent killing of a rhino and removal of its horns in Kaziranga National Park were apprehended from Golaghat district, while the two others were arrested near Pobitora in Morigaon district.

Acting on a tip-off, the police launched a search operation in Balijan Adarsh Mising village under Bokakhat police station and arrested the two from their residence.

A Chinese made M-22 rifle with seven rounds of ammunition and a .303 rifle with six cartridges were recovered from them.
 

The accused were identified as Zila Doley and Bhaiti Pegu, police said, adding, a hunt was on to nab five more poachers allegedly involved in the killing of rhinos and removal of their horns in the World Heritage Site.

Based on intelligence reports, the police arrested two notorious poachers, identified as Ramcher Ali and Abdul Hanan, near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary when they were plotting to kill a rhino there, the sources said.

The 38.8 km Pobitora Sanctuary has the world's highest density of one-horned rhinoceros in its 16 sq km effective rhino habitat.

Meanwhile, forest personnel caught two other persons last evening for allegedly killing two deer and consuming their meat at Khotiakhuli in Numaligarh area of the district, bordering Karbi Anglong district.
