Four Pakistani security personnel were killed and two others injured today in a powerful IED blast in the restive North Waziristan region, where the army is engaged in an offensive campaign against militants.

The roadside blast happened when the officials were on a routine patrol in Datakhel district, official said.

While they were on the patrol, a landmine went off leaving the four personnel dead and destroying their vehicle completely.

The injured were airlifted to Combined Military Hospital in Bannu, The Express Tribune reported.

Security forces have launched after search operations in the area after the blast.

Pakistani troops have been engaged in a full-scale offensive against Taliban and other militants in North Waziristan region under an operation named 'Zarb-i-Azb', and also in Khyber, named Khyber-1.

The operation has been intensified following the massacre of over 150 people, mostly students, by Taliban gunmen at an army-run school in Peshawar in December.

The Taliban and its allies have been waging an insurgency for more than a decade in Pakistan, seeking to install their own brand of fundamentalist Islamic rule.
