Actor-filmmaker James Franco says the prospect of Republican presidential nominee Donal Trump becoming US' next president is "scary".

38-year-old Franco, however, dismissed the importance of an actor's political views on a reality TV star running for president, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Franco was present in Deauville, France where his film "In Dubious Battle", also directed and produced by him, was screened.

The film is about the labor movement for fruit workers in California during the 1930s.

It won over the hearts of the audience in Deauville, where the film received a warm welcome and feted Franco following its mixed reception in Venice.

He was welcomed on stage by French actress Ana Girardot, who recited a poem in the spirit of Franco's creative experimentation.
