A free press is an essential pillar of democracy, US' new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said today, asserting that the Trump administration was committed to promoting and protecting the freedom of the press.
Pompeo, a former CIA director who was sworn-in as the 70th US Secretary of State yesterday replacing Rex Tillerson who was fired by President Donald Trump in March, was speaking on the 25th anniversary of the World Press Freedom Day.
"On the 25th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, we renew our commitment to promoting and protecting a free press, which is an essential pillar of democracy," Pompeo, 54, said.
"The United States values freedom of the press as a key component of democratic governance. By fostering a free press, citizens are more informed, active and engaged in political decision-making, and can better hold their governments accountable," he said.
Pompeo's remarks came days after ten journalists, including an AFP chief photographer, were killed in a double suicide blast in Kabul on Monday that claimed 25 lives.
"Today, we honour the many journalists and media actors who have dedicated their lives, often at great risk, to promote transparency and accountability throughout the world," Pompeo said.
The UN General Assembly has declared May 3 as the World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
