Free sops to entice voters worries Kanpur administration

With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections starting from February 11, the Kanpur district administration is preparing to put a halt on political leaders who may try to lure voters by giving out tickets for free of the India vs England T20 match on January 26 here.

The authorities have cautioned the cricket match organisers and ticket distributing agencies to immediately the inform the administration if a person buys the tickets in large numbers.

Kanpur District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said that candidates distributing money and liquor are being monitored by the administration and also prosecuted.

"This time the nomination filing process starts from January 24 and the cricket match in Green Park area is on January 26. In this case we will be monitoring that a candidate does not distribute the tickets for free to gather votes, that's why directions have been given to ticket distributors," he said.
 

Liquor shops have also been advised to inform about the sales of this month last year, so that it can be compared with this month's to determine who are those people who bought liquor in large quantity, Sharma said.

Polling for the 10 Assembly constituencies in Kanpur district will take place on February 19.

Besides the practice of liquor and cash distribution, the administration will also monitor social media and Whatsapp to check if any person is posting controversial material. Any person indulging in such activities will be face action, the DM said.
