Freight earnings for Railways goes up by more than 25 per cent

Railways carried 164.38 million tonnes (MT) of freight during April-May 2012 as against 157.23 MT carried during the same period last year, registering an increase of 4.55 per cent, a Railway Ministry release said today.

In May this year, the total earnings from freight were Rs 7195.62 crore out of which Rs 3194.66 crore came from transportation of 41.62 MT of coal, followed by Rs 680.29 crore from 9.59 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users and Rs 761.79 cr from 9.53 MT of cement.

The national transporter earned Rs 474.82 crore from the transportation of 3.33 MT of foodgrains, Rs 403.51 crore from 3.48 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 458.59 crore from 3.03 MT of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 253.16 crore from 2.64 MT of fertilisers, Rs 117.99 crore from 1.26 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 315.07 crore from 3.50 million tonnes by container service and Rs 535.74 crore from 6.15 MT of other goods.
