Freight earnings up by over 10 pc

Railways generated Rs 48,062.07 crore of earnings from freight traffic during April-September 2014 as compared to Rs 43,457.78 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.59 per cent.

Railways carried 532.44 million tonnes (MT) of freight during April-September 2014 as compared to 511 MT carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.20 per cent, according to Railway Ministry data.

During September, railways generated Rs 7,703.85 crore as compared to Rs 6992.18 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.18 per cent.

The national transporter earned Rs 3,519.49 crore from transportation of 42.45 MT of coal, followed by Rs 564.70 crore from 8.48 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user.
 

Railways earned Rs 690.02 crore from 8.97 MT of cement, Rs 624.78 crore from 4.40 MT of foodgrains, Rs 365.90 crore from 3.20 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 488 crore from 3.37 MT of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 403.75 crore from 4.04 MT of fertilisers, Rs 156.07 crore from 1.66 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 385.18 crore from 4.23 MT by container service and Rs 505.02 crore from 5.91 MT of other goods.
