Freight earnings up by over 8 pc

Railways have earned Rs 67,705.11 crore from freight traffic during April-December 2013 against Rs 61,408.05 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering a 8.42 per cent increase.

Railways carried 769.74 million tonnes (MT) of freight during April-December 2013 compared to 735.22 MT during the same period last year, registering a growth of 4.70 per cent, as per Railway Ministry data.

In December 2013, railways earned of Rs 8,635.38 crore from freight out of which Rs 3,694.27 crore came from transportation of 44.37 MT of coal, followed by Rs 914.52 crore from 10.91 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
 

The national transporter earned Rs 754.63 crore from 9.29 MT of cement, Rs 653.89 crore from 4.32 MT of foodgrains, Rs 506.02 crore from 3.65 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant and Rs 524.90 crore from 3.42 MT of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points.

It earned Rs 472.73 crore from 4.22 MT of fertilisers, Rs 149.62 crore from 1.51 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 378.48 crore from 3.99 MT by container service and Rs 586.32 crore from 6.48 MT of other goods.
