Fresh overnight snowfall in the higher reaches of the hill districts and light showers in the plains of Uttarakhand added to the winter chill across the state today.

The MeT department has forecast that the minimum temperature will drop around two to three degrees below normal over the next few days.

There have been reports of fresh snowfall in Dhanolti, Chakrata and most of the hill districts including Rudraparayag and Chamoli where the famous shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath are located, MeT Director Vikram Singh said.

Light showers have been reported from most places and the minimum temperature is likely to be 2-3 degrees below normal in the hills as well as in the plains over the next few days, he said.

With a drop of 2-3 degrees likely, the minimum temperature will hover around 5-6 degrees in the plains and 0 to -1 degree in the higher reaches of the hills over the next 3-4 days, he said.

Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Nandadevi National Park and the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary (Kedarnath Kasturi Mrig Abhayaranya) also received light snowfall, a report from Chamoli said, adding the drizzle in the lower areas intensified the cold conditions.

The sky remained overcast for most part of the day in Dehradun which received light showers in the morning.
