A Thane resident has been accused of cheating a person and his relatives from Karnataka to the tune of Rs 28.5 lakh, police said today.

The Thane police has launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused Abdul Razzak Modak, following a complaint of a 44-year-old man Rizwan Dastagir Sahib Manurkar from Belgaum, Karnataka, filed here yesterday.

Manurkar, a fruit seller, alleged that Abdul assured him and some of his relatives that he will provide them with jobs at the Dubai airport and extracted a hefty amount of Rs 28.55 lakh from them between November, 2013 and March, 2014, senior police inspector S R Mundhe, told PTI.

Modak was not an overseas recruitment agent, police said, adding, a case has been registered against him under Section 420 (cheating) and section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC.
