Fudging in desilting work: 8 govt workers, contractor jailed

Special Judge B R Kedia sentenced three engineers, including an executive engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, besides five manual workers of the department -- three mates and two beldars, to jail after holding them guilty of causing a loss of Rs 4.45 lakh to the exchequer in desilting the flood drain.

"All the accused persons have entered into criminal conspiracy in order to cheat the Irrigation and Flood Control Department of the government of NCT of Delhi in account of transportation of garbage from Najafgarh drain and Bhlaswa sanitary landfill site on basis of forged transport receipts and entries in measurement books and forged entries in silt register maintained at landfill sites," the judge said.

 

Those convicted by the court are Executive Engineer S D Sharma, Assistant Engineer Deepak Bhatnagar, Junior Engineer R K Sharma, who were all sentenced to 30 months in jail and fine of Rs 30,000 each.

The court also convicted three mates Ausat Ali, Jagdish and Suraj Bhan and beldars Ram Chander and Keshav Das, who were handed down two years in jail each and fined Rs 10,000.

It also jailed private contractor S R Sharma to 30 months in jail and fined him Rs 10,000. (MORE)
