University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Ved Prakash today stressed the need for enhancing funding for research and establishing incubation centres in universities to link academic institutions to industry.

Delivering a lecture here, he said that research is undoubtedly fundamental to the existence of a university.

"Funding for research needs to be enhanced...Research activities also need to be expanded by increasing the funding for doctoral and post-doctoral programmes in different institutions and various sectors, particularly in areas where society and industry can benefit the most," he said at the Panjab University here.

A new culture of research should emphasise that grants are linked to innovation outcomes, he said.

"It would be relevant in this connection to establish incubation centres in the universities for trying innovations and through them establish their linkage with the industry," he said.

Liberal research support needs to be provided for Indian scholars who undergo experiences in high-end research laboratories within the country and abroad, he said.
