South Korea's deputy Foreign and Trade Minister Ahn Ho-young said the world was constantly changing as the United States is "not what it used to be" and because the cold war system has ended.

He also said the relationship between US and China is of "serious importance" to the entire world and policymakers in both countries, India and South Korea should make sure that the ties are based on "cooperation and not confrontation."

Recognising India as a 'big fish' in the world economy, he said there would be a time when the country would be leading the G-20 and stressed the need for making use of the bloc for bringing stability in the world not only in economic sector but in other areas like security.

Dismissing suggestions that G-20 was just a "talking show", the top diplomat said people in South Korea take the bloc "very seriously" as their country's economy is entirely dependent on international trade.

"The world is not that it used to be. The cold war system was not the best way. US is not today what it used to be...G20 is in a unique place to play a role that would address the gap between demand and supply. The international system is changing significantly," he said, delivering a talk 'G20: Korea's Perspective' at the Observer Research Foundation here.

"The world is in a different position. Important actors like India, Brazil and China should be consulted and they should form part of international discussions," he said.

On the BRICS, Ahn said the "huge gap" between the member countries on various issues like human rights, imposition of rule of law and society are an "impediment" in achieving something constructive.

The Vice Minister also narrated the role played by South Korea in formation of G20 after the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that there should be a new global order to address the financial crisis of 2008.

Without naming any country, he also said some countries of G-20 were practising protectionism and that all countries of the bloc should speak against such measures.
