Girish Chandra Tripathi, professor of economics in Allahabad University, has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which has been witnessing clashes recently over demands for restoration of the students' union.
His name was cleared by President Pranab Mukherjee, who is the visitor of the central university, yesterday, officials in the HRD Ministry said.
Tripathi is also the president of Federation of Central Universities' Teachers' Associations (FEDCUTA) and Allahabad University Teachers Association (AUTA).
