Mahatma Gandhi is like a candle as he enlightened the world and scarified his own life, the Governor of Bali has said, underlining that the peace icon's teachings are still relevant in modern society.

"It is important that all of us, including the young children and students, follow the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, and become a good citizen and a good human being," Made Mangku Pastika, Governor of the Province of Bali, said delivering the Second Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture here.

"The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi for maintaining peace, harmony and non-violence are extremely relevant and important in the modern-day society, where we are seeing a rising trend of people resorting to violence in addressing their issues and conflicts are seen," he said.

The Governor emphasised on Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy and ideals such as Ahimsa. He stated that Mahatma Gandhi for him is like a candle as he enlightened the world and scarified his own life.

At an event held yesterday at Gedung Wiswa Sabha, Pastika became the second Indonesian leader to deliver the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Lecture. The first lecture was delivered on October 2, 2012, by Indonesian Vice President Boediono.

The event was organised by the Consulate General of India, Bali, in collaboration with the Embassy of India and the Jawaharlal Nehru Indian Cultural Centre (JNICC) in Jakarta.

The Governor and India's Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh released the Bahasa Indonesia edition of "Gandhi's Outstanding Leadership", a book written by former Indian diplomat Alan Pascal Nazareth.

This is the 14th language edition of the book, with earlier publications in eight Indian languages and English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Korean.

The Governor of Bali acknowledged that the progress of Bali is supported by the Indian government and the people.

Pastika stated that the memorial lecture is one medium to strengthen the brotherhood through understanding and implementation of the great values of Mahatma Gandhi. He hoped that the relationship between both countries will stay harmonious, particularly to cope with the global challenges.
