Gandhian Bharali gets financial assistance from Gogoi

Ailing Gandhian and Padmashree recipient Hema Bharali was today given a financial assistance of Rs 50,000 by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

The Chief Minister gave the assistance to the nonagenarian freedom fighter, who is presently undergoing treatment at a private nursing home for old age related ailments, from his relief fund, an official release said here.

Gogoi also wished Bharali a speedy recovery and said that he was praying for her good health.

Bharali was actively associated with Vinoba Bhave's Bhoodan movement and was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals since childhood.

She was involved in rural development, spread of basic education, national integration, removal of social discrimination and also worked for empowerment of women and children.
 

She was conferred the Padmashree Award for the year 2005, National Communal Harmony Award in 2006 and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award for the year 2009.
