A ten-member gang beheaded a murder accused and threw the severed head on a road near Pattukottai in Thanjavur district, police said Thursday.
The victim M Prakash Kumar was an accused along with six others in the killing of Thamba Karthi, a history-sheeter, police said.
They had allegedly committed the crime on August 13 and were released on conditional bail Wednesday, they said.
The seven, including Prakash Kumar, were travelling in a vehicle after signing at a police station on Wednesday evening, when the 10-member gang on two-wheelers tried in vain to stop the vehicle, they said.
The gang hurled country-made bombs at the vehicle. Barring Prakash, the others managed to escape.
The gang caught hold of Prakash, beheaded him before dumping the severed head on the road and fleeing, police said.
It is suspected that a relative of Thamba, and his associates were behind the killing, they added.
