A six-member gang struck at a cooperative bank here and decamped with 371 sovereigns of gold jewellery, police said today.

The worth of the stolen jewels would be about Rs 64 lakh, they said.

The secretary of the bank Velu was missing, police said.

The gang raided the primary agricultural cooperative society bank at Adhapathaki near Kalayaarkovil in the district last night and decamped with the gold jewellery kept inside the locker, they said.

The miscreants tied up the watchman, who later managed to free himself.

Police said the gang did not break open the locker as the key was left in the keyhole.

It is suspected that some bank employee is involved, police said.

The watchman said that the miscreants tied him up and looted the jewellery.

The bank alarm did not go off as the electrical wires were found cut. There was also no CCTV in the bank.
