Gang of robbers busted, cash and valuables over Rs 1cr seized

With the arrest of three persons, the state's crime branch has claimed to have busted a gang of burglars and recovered cash and stolen valuables of over Rs 1 crore.

The arrested persons, identified as Imram Safi (23), Mohammed Rashid (21), and Mohammed Shanawaz (20), all natives of Uttar Pradesh, were allegedly involved in three major robberies in the state capital last week, Inspector General of Police Raipur Range GP Singh told reporters today.

Based on the evidences and clues during investigation, Shanawaz and Imran were rounded up from Nizamuddin railway station in New Delhi while Mohammed Rashid was held from Nagpur by a team of Central Crime Branch yesterday, the IG said.
 

Rs 72.45 lakh in cash, gold and diamond jewellery, one kg silver ornaments, expensive watches and other belongings worth around 28 lakh was recovered from their possession, the IG said.

The trio had committed robberies at a house in Tagore Nagar and Rajendra Nagar on November 25 and a major burglary of around Rs 70 lakh, including cash and valuables at a house in Samta colony on November 27, following which CCB cops swung into action, the IG said.

The evidences, particularly the footage of a CCTV camera installed in house of a victim and railway station led to the arrest of accused, he said.

Briefing the modus operandi of the gang, Singh said after reaching the city on November 24, the trio hired an auto-rickshaw to carry out a recce in the posh localities by impersonating as street vendors.

After identifying the locked houses, one member of the gang trespassed while other remained outside to raise alarm.

After carrying out robbery at Samta colony, they all boarded a train for Delhi.

However, Rashid alighted from the train in Nagpur to dispose-off the stolen valuables, the IG said.

During investigation, the trio admitted to the crime, the officer said, adding, their involvement in more thefts during past few months in the city cannot be ruled out.

They are being interrogated and further probe is on, the IG said.
