Gang posing as Income Tax officials cons cotton trader

: A 12 member gang posing as Income Tax Officials reportedly conned a cotton trader here into parting with cash and ornaments, police said.

They said the gang entered the house of Basheer in Singanallur area early yesterday and said they were there to conduct a raid. They opened an alimrah and found a locker, which could not be opened due to some problem.

They then asked the trader to accompany them and left with the locker in two waiting cars, police said.

At Neelambur area on the National Highway, they forced him to get out and fled.

Basheer lodged a complaint with police, claiming that the box contained Rs 40 lakh and 150 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
 

Police said they are carrying out enquiries to ascertain the actual amount of cash and jewellery in the locker.
