Gangster carrying rewards of Rs 65,000 held after encounter

A gangster, involved in numerous cases of robbery in seven states and carrying rewards of Rs 65,000 on his head, was arrested today in Mathura district after a brief encounter with a joint team of Delhi Police and its UP counterparts.

A specific tip about movement of Sher Khan (30) and his associate Shahun to former's native Bishambra village in Mathura was received by Delhi Police's Special cell, police said.

At around 4 AM, the duo were spotted riding towards Kosi Kalan on a motorcycle. When they were intercepted by the joint team, the duo started firing and several shots hit the bullet proof jackets of the policemen but Khan was overpowered while Sahun managed to flee.
 

An automatic 9 MM Carbine with 20 live cartridges, one 7.65 MM semi-automatic pistol with nine live cartridges and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from him, DCP (Special Cell) P S Kushwah said.

He had escaped from the custody of Madhya Pradesh Police alongwith four other gangsters on December 12, 2015. They had also taken away firearms of the police party after giving them sedative-laced milk while escorting the prisoners from Ujjain Jail to Bhondsi Jail in Haryana.

Among the five, Sarvar Khan was caught on the spot, while Liyakat surrendered in court next day. Khan and two others were absconding. Sahun, who had also escaped from MP Police's custody, managed to escape while Khan was caught today.

Khan was wanted in a case registered by Special Cell under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, as an active member of Salli and Jafru gang of Mewat region. A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced on his arrest while Rs 15,000 reward was announced for the same by UP Police, he said.

Khan during interrogation revealed that after escaping from MP Police's custody, he, Sahun and Lilu evaded police by moving to southern part of the country, he said.

They committed a kidnapping for ransom, two Petrol pump robberies, 10 carjackings, two ATM robberies, six truck-jacking and other crimes in UP, MP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharastra and Telengana while being on run, the officer added.
