The brother of a notorious gangster, who had been gunned down in a police encounter in 2004, was arrested along with an accomplice for allegedly killing a trader of Azadpur's vegetable market.

Bijender (32), younger brother of gangster Anil Bhagte, was arrested yesterday along with one Meer Singh for killing the latter's business rival Surendra at Azadpur Mandi.

Bijender had gunned down Surender, who had been an associate of Bhagte, on April 28, police said today.

Bijender wanted to re-establish the terror regime of his brother in Azadpur Mandi, while Singh was the commission agent for the murder and helped in carrying out the act, they added.

Bhagte, who had 18 criminal cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion against him, was shot dead in an encounter by the crime branch of Delhi Police in 2004.

"Police got information that Bijendera and Meer Singh were coming towards Singh Border yesterday. Police laid a trap and arrested the duo from there. Police have recovered one loaded pistol of .315 bore with 4 live cartridges and a bike from their possession," he said.
