A gangster was today shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bettiah court premises in West Champaran district, police said.

Three assailants who had been laying in wait, shot Bablu Dube dead on the stairs of the court building when he was coming down after trial in a case, Superintendent of Police Vinay Kumar said.

Dube -- accused in over 36 cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping for ransom -- died on the spot while the assailants fled on motorcycles, he said.

The gangster was brought to the court of first-class judicial magistrate Kumud Ranjan for trial in an extortion case.

The body was sent for post-mortem and raids were being carried out to nab the culprits, the SP added.
