Ganja plants worth around Rs one crore destroyed in AP

Illegal plantation of ganja worth around Rs one crore which was being cultivated over 10 acres of farmland at Moyyalagummi under Pedabayalu mandal in agency area here was destroyed today.

"Illegal ganja plantation worth Rs one crore was destroyed in an operation carried out by a joint team of 80 personnel from several departments, including Excise, Revenue and Police," Deputy Commissioner of Excise, C Vivekananda Reddy, said.

Three persons, who had been growing the drug on their farms since the past few years, have been identified and the process to register cases against them has been initiated, he said.

The tribal farmers had been warned beforehand that action would be taken against them if they grow ganja, Reddy said.
 

Plantations in few other pockets in Visakhapatnam would also be destroyed in the coming days, he added.
