Tribal men and women offered prayers for Sangma who was born at Chapathi village in the West Garo Hills.

That a person from a remote village in the northeast could contest the Presidential election was what Garo tribals are upbeat about, Sangma's son Conrad said here.

"Mr P A Sangma has brought new hope for tribals in the country and we are proud to have him as a father who has the courage to take up their cause," Conrad, the Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya, said.
