A Garo militant was caught and another, wanted for kidnapping and killing an Intelligence Bureau officer, escaped during an encounter with security forces in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district today.

Police said acting on intelligence report, district police along with the state police (Swift Weapon and Tactics) commandos laid a trap at Samanda for cadres of A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militants who came to extort money.

An encounter ensued after which one ASAK militant was arrested, Inspector General (Operations) G H P Raju said.

A lot of blood was seen at the place of the encounter and police believe that ASAK leader Sengbat D Shira who was present at the time was injured, he said.

Sengbat is wanted for kidnapping and subsequently killing a young IB officer in a remote village in South Garo Hills district last month.

Meanwhile, state Director General of Police Rajiv Mehta reviewed during the day the operations launched by police in North Garo Hills district to rescue an unarmed constable who was taken at gun point on November 6 by suspected GNLA ultras.

Raju said the state police have sought the assistance of the Army and CRPF's CoBRA commandos to trace the missing constable.
