Gas explosion injures 11 in California: police

A gas line explosion in California injured 11 people at a sheriff's gun range, police said, identifying many of the hurt as prison inmates.

It was not immediately known what caused the blast in Fresno, which is located between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Fresno County Sheriff's Office tweeted: "Total of 11 people injured. 3 inmates were taken back to Fresno County Jail & were never hospitalized."

Photographs from the scene showed a huge ball of fire against a clear-blue sky.

The Fresno Fire Department tweeted: "Gas lines are shut down, Fresno Fire continues to monitor atmosphere and patrol the area around grass fire."
 

It added: "Incident is still under investigation FFD Investigators will work with all involved parties to try to determine what occurred prior to fire.
