Gau rakshaks won't be allowed to take law into hands: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said nobody, including the 'gau rakshaks', would be allowed to take law into their hands in the state.

"We will not allow anyone to take law into their hands. It may be 'gau rakshak' or someone at other side...No one can take law in hand," he said in the Assembly during a discussion on the Governor's address to the House as part of the ongoing session.

In a veiled reference to the controversy surrounding the statement by Sadhvi Saraswati against beef consumption, the CM said, "We cannot stop people from talking as they point to freedom of speech."
 

"There is no restriction on the speeches unless you incite people's sentiments. We will not tolerate if someone is trying to incite the people. The government will appreciate if peace is maintained," he said.

While addressing the convention at Ramnathi, Sadhvi, who was one of the speakers during a session, had reportedly said that those who consider eating beef as a status symbol should be hanged.

The chief minister said that he was thankful to people of Goa, who maintained their calm during the series of desecration of religious places reported in the state recently.

On the apprehensions expressed by various opposition legislators during the day on the floor of the House, Parrikar appealed to the members to provide specific information about the drug trade in the state.

"I will assure you that the name of the informant would be kept secret," he said, adding that recently he had received a letter, based on which the Anti Narcotics Cell conducted a raid and seized drugs.

Parrikar also said that the state government has worked out a plan to provide quality education in the primary and secondary school curriculum.

He said a "package" comprising value education, traffic awareness, garbage management and financial education would be introduced in the schools, which will be taught to the students after Diwali vacation this year.

Parrikar said that although education should be imparted in mother tongue, emphasis should also be given on the quality of education.
