The Gauhati High Court has approved a proposal for setting up of fast track courts for day-to-day trial of cases related to rape and murder of women and children.

An administrative committee consisting has resolved to approve the matter in a meeting held yesterday, a release issued by the high court said today.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a letter on March 26, had urged the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to consider setting up of fast track courts in the wake of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Nagaon district, and similar cases in the state.

The committee will work out the modalities and submit a report in this regard within three days, the release said.

In his letter, the chief minister also lauded the efforts of the high court for constituting fast track courts to try cases under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1971, which has led to speedy conviction of culprits.
