Barman would announce the new movement plans of the GCPP in the June 8 meeting, the first GCCP public meeting after its formation, GCCP sources said today.

Barman and his followers, who were then in The Greater Cooch Behar Peoples Association (GCPA), observed 84-hour hunger strike from September, 20 2005 at Bhetaguri.

The hunger strike started after a massive violence on that day in which three policemen and two GCPA supporters were killed.

After that Barman had to surrender to the court and some of his associates were arrested.

Barman had to spend six years in jail. After his release he formed the Greater Cooch Behar Peoples Party. Many of his followers, who were in the GCPA or in the Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party (GCDP), joined the new party.

The main demand of the GCPP is implementation of the merger agreement by which the erstwhile princely state of Cooch Behar merged with India. They want Cooch Behar to become a C-category state under Central rule.
