The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has ordered demolition of the Mackie's Saturday Night market, a prime attraction for locals and tourists.

The Mackie's Saturday Night market is situated in Arpora village, around 25 kms away from here.

Social activist Kashinath Shetye had approached GCZMA against the market and alleged that it is an illegal construction and is in contempt of Nation Green Tribunal order on the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).

The GCZMA observed that the market has illegally constructed temporary huts, stalls and permanent structures including office, dance floor and concrete structure at the edge of the tidal creek and should be demolished.

The authority has also ruled that the deck has been created through illegalland filling and land reclamation (of Arpora creek) and that the entire market is situated within 15 meters of high tide line.

GCZMA said the structures are constructed in No Development Zone (NDZ) area after 1991 and thesame are in violation of CRZ notification 1991.

The Authority has directed the violator to restore the land to its original state failing which it has asked the deputy collector Bardez to ensure that the same is demolished.

The GCZMA also decided that since the structures are in NDZ area, no permission shall be granted for conducting activity or event in the said area in future and in the event of any structure being erected, the same shall be demolished.
