Congress today accused the NDA government at the Centre of working to safeguard the interests of the capitalists and claimed that the new general budget will lead to price escalation.

"The Prime Minister makes tall claims all the time, let the new budget be presented and see how the prices escalate," AICC General Secretary incharge of party affairs in Uttar Pradesh, Madhusudan Mistry told reporters.

He claimed that this was the government of capitalists and working to safeguard their interests.

"Those who had put in their money are now pressuring the government for a good return and forcing the government to bring anti-people ordinanes like the land acquisition," he alleged.

"The proportionate benefit of the reduction in petroleum prices has not been transferred to the public as the government is continuously hiking excise duty," he said, adding that by doing this the central government was filling its coffers.

The Congress leader, who earlier addressed the meeting of state office bearers, said that instructions have been issued to them to go to their respective districts and give momentum to the membership drive.

They have also been instructed to make successful the "rail roko, chakka jam" agitation by the party against the central and state governments on March 12, he said.
