Hundreds of lawyers went on strike at the district court complex here today claiming failure of the SP government in keeping promises made to them before the Assembly elections.

District Bar Association president Ram Avtar Gupta said the party had made several promises to the lawyer fraternity for their betterment, including compensation of Rs 5 lakh to dependants of deceased lawyer, allowances to newly-enrolled advocates, among others, but they have not been fulfilled.

Raising these issues, the lawyers went on strike shouting slogans and burning effigies of the state government.

Gupta also said that from tomorrow, lawyers would strike work to press for their demand for a separate bench of the Allahabad Hight Court in western part of the state.
