A giraffe gave birth to a calf at the Alipore Zoo here Tuesday, taking the herd count to 10, an official at the zoo said.
The calf is yet to be named and it was born to Lakshmi at 12.30 am Tuesday, the Director of the Alipore Zoo, Ashis Samanta, told PTI.
The calf is a male and it is doing fine, Samanta added.
"He is our new year's gift. He weighs around 40-45 kg and is doing fine. He will be given an appropriate name later," Samanta said.
Lakshmi and the calf have been separated from the herd for their safety, the zoo director said, adding, both will be under observation for some more days.
A female calf was born to Lakshmi in 2016, another zoo official said.
In 2018, another female calf was born to Trina and Sabuj, the official said.
