Unhappy over a panchayat decision awarding just five slaps to a man who tried to rape her, a 19-year-old scheduled caste girl allegedly tried to commit suicide in Pahasu area of the district.
According to police, an upper caste village strongman had asked the girl to work at his field on Sunday and when she reached the farm he allegedly tried to rape her.
After the girl resisted, the accused thrashed her, Circle Officer Sudhir Kumar said today.

According to family, the matter was raised at Sohi village panchayat, which awarded just five slaps to the accused yesterday.
Apparently disturbed over the incident the girl tried to to commit suicide by jumping into a canal here yesterday, family said.
However, she was rescued by passersby.
