A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence at Belgharia in adjoining North 24 Parganas district, police said today.

The 17-year-old girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan yesterday evening after a quarrel with a neighbour, Gaurav Paswan, police sources said.

The family members, however, alleged that Paswan who was stalking the girl, entered their residence when she was alone with her younger brother and tried to molest her yesterday morning.

They said after the girl raised an alarm, neighbours rushed in and drove Paswan out of the house, but, infuriated with the insult, he returned drunk in the evening and sexually harassed her.

After the brother raised the alarm, Paswan fled, the family said.

After her parent's returned, the girl who had locked herself up in a room, was found hanging from the ceiling fan, they said.

The police, however, claimed that the girl had committed suicide after a quarrel with Paswan.

"We have received no complaint of molestation. The girl committed suicide after she had a quarrel with Paswan. We are on the look out for Paswan," Police Commissioner, Barrackpore Commissionerate Sanjay Singh, said.
